One of the biggest problems with creating an accessible campus is converting a frames page. Frames are implemented by using one html document to tell the browser how to display two or more additional pages. Frames are inaccessible because text-only browsers can only display one page at time. Typically, frames are used to display a menu frame and a content frame.
This page will address the conversion of a two frame menu/content page using Macromedia Dreamweaver. These steps can be modified to fit any number of frames. If you need help getting started contact Sean Ruppert (phone x7361; email ruppert@uwosh.edu).
Dreamweaver works best when working within a defined site. When you define a site you are telling Dreamweaver that all of the files within a certain folder belong together. Dreamweaver keeps track of links and filenames, and automatically updates the files within that page. To define a site, choose define site from the site menu and choose new.
Give the site a name that you will remember. Locate the local root folder by clicking on the folder icon to the left. This will open an open file dialog box. Browse to the folder containing all of your site files.
Your site is now defined.
Choose Site Files from the Window menu. Open the file that you used for your menu.
Choose Table from the insert menu. Insert a table that is 2 columns and 1 row. Set the table to 80% width.
Select everything on this page except for the table. Cut and paste it into the left column.
Choose save as template from the file menu. Make note of the name you give the file.
Choose the cell on the right. Go to Modify | Template | Mark Selection as Editable you will be prompted to name the region. Name the region Content.
Save the template again. You may close the template.
Open any of your content pages. Select Modify | Template | Apply Template to Page.
You may be prompted to indicate the region of the template you wish to place the page in. Choose the Content region you created in the previous step. Save the page. You can repeat this step on all of your pages.
Be sure to check links other content to ensure it all translated correctly.
