PreCollege Programs

PreCollege/Outreach Programs offer residential experiences which help middle and high school students prepare for college. The primary goal of the program is to assist students of color and students from financially-disadvantaged backgrounds to prepare for postsecondary education. The program includes academic, career and personal development courses, as well as social and cultural activities.

There are six PreCollege programs available for middle and high school students:

  • PreCollege Enrichment Program, for Grades 8-12 (PEP)
  • Summer Mathematics and Reading Talent Scholars, for qualified 7th Graders (SMARTS)
  • Young Entrepreneurial Scholars, for Grades 10-12 (YES)
  • YES Internship Program, for Grades 10-12 (YES INTERNSHIP)
  • Wisconsin Youth in Nursing, for Grades 10-12 (WYN)
  • Aspiring Pupils for Professional Leadership in Education, for Grades 8-10 (APPLE)

Cultural & Recreational Activities
Organized cultural, social and recreational activities are provided for participants throughout the two-week period. Because the programs also include weekends, thre are full-day weekend activities as well.

Housing & Food
Students live in a residence hall and are supervised by appropriate male and female resident assistants. Meals are provided through the university food service and off-campus vendors.

Cost
Cost varies for each program. Most participants are eligible to apply for a scholarship that covers the cost of the program, including health and activity fees.

Eligibility
Eligibility varies for each program, though there are some requirements common to all. Students of color and students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds are given priority due to under-representation within Wisconsin colleges. All applicants must have a C average or above, be highly motivated and have an interest in furthering their education by attending college.
