Two PreCollege Programs Target Students of Color

OSHKOSH--Two pre-college programs for middle and high school students, primarily students of color and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, will run through June 23 at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Both began June 10.

A total of 26 high school students from as far away as McComb, Miss., will participate in the Young Entrepreneurial Scholars (YES) program, which is designed to prepare them for careers in accounting and other business disciplines.

A total of 28 middle school students will participate in the Summer Mathematics and Reading Talent Scholars (SMARTS) program, which provides intensive reading and mathematics classes for students from several Milwaukee middle schools. This is the third and final year of the program funded by the UW-System.

The YES program will include visits to area businesses and professional roundtables led by representatives from Oshkosh Truck, Menasha Corp. and the president of Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants (WICPA). It will also include classes co-taught by presidents and other top executives from Oshkosh Truck, H. Derksen & Sons Co., Curwood Inc., Integrated Systems Group Inc., Centracor Inc., Coleman & Williams Ltd., Charles Levy Circulating Co. and Chamco of Oshkosh.

Participants will have the opportunity to shadow employees at area companies. Classes will cover English composition, mathematics and business skills. Students will participate in business simulations.

The YES program is sponsored by the UW Oshkosh Center for Academic Support and Diversity, UW Oshkosh College of Business Administration (COBA), WICPA, and the National Association of Black Accountants.

Students attending the program also will come from high schools in Appleton, Chicago, Green Bay, Madison, Milwaukee, Racine and Wauwatosa. Faculty will include nine from the UW Oshkosh COBA and others from the UW Oshkosh English and economics departments.

Students in the SMARTS program concentrate on reading and mathematics strategies during the two-week summer session. During the school year, they participate in tutoring, mentoring and other activities at UW-Milwaukee.
