Two PreCollege Programs Target Students of Color
OSHKOSH--Two pre-college programs for middle
and high school students, primarily students of color
and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds,
will run through June 23 at the University of Wisconsin
Oshkosh. Both began June 10.
A total of 26 high school students from as far away
as McComb, Miss., will participate in the Young Entrepreneurial
Scholars (YES) program, which is designed to prepare them
for careers in accounting and other business disciplines.
A total of 28 middle school students will participate
in the Summer Mathematics and Reading Talent Scholars
(SMARTS) program, which provides intensive reading and
mathematics classes for students from several Milwaukee
middle schools. This is the third and final year of the
program funded by the UW-System.
The YES program will include visits to area businesses
and professional roundtables led by representatives from
Oshkosh Truck, Menasha Corp. and the president of Wisconsin
Institute of Certified Public Accountants (WICPA). It
will also include classes co-taught by presidents and
other top executives from Oshkosh Truck, H. Derksen &
Sons Co., Curwood Inc., Integrated Systems Group Inc.,
Centracor Inc., Coleman & Williams Ltd., Charles Levy
Circulating Co. and Chamco of Oshkosh.
Participants will have the opportunity to shadow employees
at area companies. Classes will cover English composition,
mathematics and business skills. Students will participate
in business simulations.
The YES program is sponsored by the UW Oshkosh Center for Academic Support and Diversity, UW Oshkosh College of Business Administration
(COBA), WICPA, and the National Association of Black Accountants.
Students attending the program also will come from high
schools in Appleton, Chicago, Green Bay, Madison, Milwaukee,
Racine and Wauwatosa. Faculty will include nine from the
UW Oshkosh COBA and others from the UW Oshkosh English
and economics departments.
Students in the SMARTS program concentrate on reading
and mathematics strategies during the two-week summer
session. During the school year, they participate in tutoring,
mentoring and other activities at UW-Milwaukee.
