Students of Color Begin Two Pre-College
Programs June 9

OSHKOSH-Two pre-college programs, primarily for students of color from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, will run from June 9 through 22 at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.

The Young Entrepreneurial Scholars (YES) program is designed to prepare high school students for careers in accounting and other business disciplines. Thirty-one students from schools in Menasha, Milwaukee, Oshkosh and Pattison, Miss., are enrolled.

The Summer Mathematics and Reading Talent Scholars (SMARTS) program provides intensive reading and mathematics classes for 6th-grade students from six Milwaukee middle schools. Thirty-three are enrolled.

The YES program will include visits to area businesses, professional roundtables and classes. Participants will shadow employees at area companies. Classes will cover English composition, mathematics and business skills, and students will participate in business simulations.

Funded primarily by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, the YES program receives additional support from the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the National Association of Black Accountants-Milwaukee Chapter and the university's College of Business Administration. It began in 1999.

The SMARTS program, funded through a UW-System grant, began in 1998. During the school year, students in the program participate in tutoring, mentoring and other activities at UW-Milwaukee that complement the two-week session at UW Oshkosh.

The YES program includes 14 African-American, 10 Asian and six Hispanic students. SMARTS includes 21 African-American, three Asian and six Hispanic students.

The UW Oshkosh Center for Academic Support and Diversity administers both programs. It will also again sponsor two summer PreCollege Enrichment Program sessions for middle and high school students. The first session begins June 23. The program provides academic and personal development courses and activities to help multicultural and disadvantaged students prepare for college.
